Starfish, also known as Sea Stars, are one of the most beautiful looking animals in the vast ocean.
They have a surprisingly unusual anatomy, with no brain or blood, yet are able to digest food outside their body.
White pencil starfish are originally blue starfish that have been bleached and dried.
Sea Stars have five or more arms while humans have one.
Sea Stars have spikes on their outer covering.
Lifespan. With thousands of starfish species in the ocean, their lifespan differs greatly. Usually larger starfish live longer than the smaller species. According to National Geographic the average life span for a starfish in the wild is up to 35 years.
SOME starfish DO have teeth! Since most starfish feed using their stomachs, there's no real need for them to bite and chew the same way that say, a dog might. BUT there are some starfish that have a lot of spines located around their mouth that might be important to helping them eat.
The largest known starfish, the sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides), manages to break several records. It is the largest sea star in terms of arm span, reaching nearly 40 inches from arm tip to arm tip, and is also the heaviest, weighing in at up to 11 pounds. It also has the most arms of any known species.
They do not have a circulatory system because they do not have a heart or blood that circulates nutrients.
Sea Stars have two stomachs while humans only have one.
A starfish is marine creature that normally inhabits the deep ocean floors. Some species are venomous to human beings.
Starfish do not attack humans, but can inflict painful stings with the release of venom, when they are accidentally stepped upon or handled (* These are not the venomous type)
Reproduction. Both male and female sea stars hold their sperm and eggs in pouches at the base of their arms. They reproduce by free spawning, that means ideally the male and female release their eggs and sperm at the same time. The egg and sperm float until they meet up and the sperm is able to fertilize the egg.
