Donald Trump has asked if Vice President Kamala Harris will “resign in disgrace” from politics over claims that Iranian hackers sent information about his presidential campaign to President Joe Biden’s team.
The former president made the remarks after the FBI said that “malicious cyber actors” sent unsolicited emails to individuals with Biden’s campaign in late June and early July, which included non-public information from Trump’s campaign.
Officials said there was no indication that anyone from Biden’s team responded to the emails from the Iranian hackers.
Despite the information being allegedly handed to Biden’s campaign while he was still in the race, Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday evening: “FBI CAUGHT IRAN SPYING ON MY CAMPAIGN, AND GIVING ALL OF THE INFORMATION TO THE KAMALA HARRIS CAMPAIGN.
“THEREFORE SHE AND HER CAMPAIGN WERE ILLEGALLY SPYING ON ME.”
He added: “TO BE KNOWN AS THE IRAN, IRAN, IRAN CASE! WILL KAMALA RESIGN IN DISGRACE FROM POLITICS? WILL THE COMMUNIST LEFT PICK A NEW CANDIDATE TO REPLACE HER?”
The FBI issued a joint statement in August alongside the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to state they are investigating Iran’s efforts to “stoke discord and undermine confidence” in U.S. democratic institutions, including attempting to gain access to sensitive information related to U.S. elections.
The investigation arrived after Trump’s campaign team said Iran had hacked their campaign and distributed a trove of sensitive information.
At least three news organizations—Politico, The New York Times and The Washington Post—were said to have received the documents, but refused to report on them.
Harris’ campaign team, which features those who worked on Biden’s reelection bid, described the emails from Iran as “unwelcome and unacceptable malicious activity.”
The team added that the emails were only received by a few people, who disregarded them as spam or a phishing attempt.
The emails to the Biden campaign were sent prior to Trump’s campaign publicly disclosing that they had been hacked by Iran.
In their statement, the FBI said the email incident is the latest example of foreign actors “increasing their election influence activities” ahead of November’s race.
“In particular, Russia, Iran, and China are trying by some measure to exacerbate divisions in U.S. society for their own benefit, and see election periods as moments of vulnerability. Efforts by these, or other foreign actors, to undermine our democratic institutions are a direct threat to the U.S. and will not be tolerated,” the agency said.
Earlier this month, the Department of Justice charged two people in connection with allegations that the Kremlin funded a right-wing media organization with millions of dollars to publish pro-Russian content in order to influence the outcome of the 2024 election.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
